California governor signs bills to make textbooks lighter on wallets and backpacks

A nation inured to wanton murder was nevertheless shocked by this one: In November 2010, a group of four young men milling about as a party ended attacked another teen, randomly picking him as the victim of their vicious assault. Bobby Tillman, 18, did nothing to provoke his assailants to knock him to the ground and kick and stomp him to death. The crime occurred outside a suburban Atlanta home after parents called a halt to a teen party that had gotten out of control. This was no beating by members of a rival gang, no attack set off by longstanding grudges or old misunderstandings. ...

COACHING LEGEND BILL DELLINGER
The meet is named for legendary University of Oregon track and field coach Bill Dellinger. The Springfield, Ore., native and two-time NCAA champion for the Ducks was a three-time Olympian and won a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He set two world indoor records and six American records during his career and in cross country, never lost a race at the high school, collegiate or post-collegiate level. As Oregon's cross country coach from 1968-98, Dellinger guided the Ducks to four NCAA men's titles and 12 top-three finishes. He also counted 13 conference and four district titles. Athletes under his mentorship received 45 cross country All-America honors and won eight Pac-8/Pac-10 championship and six regional crowns.

LOOKING AHEAD
?The Ducks head to the Pre-Nationals meet at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 13. Following that meet, Oregon will compete at the Beaver Classic on Oct. 19 before the championship season begins with the Pac-12 meet Oct. 27 at Santa Clarita, Calif. (UCLA). That will be followed by the NCAA West Regional Nov. 9 in Seattle.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE TEAMS
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW
On the heels of their third NCAA top-five finish in the last five years, the Women of Oregon figure to be one of the more seasoned and talented squads nationally in 2012.
?Senior Jordan Hasay leads a host of upperclassmen rich with postseason experience, while newcomers Alexi Pappas and Allie Woodward could push the Ducks' depth and talent level up several notches this fall.
?Hasay is one of seven seniors on the roster, and will undoubtedly be one to watch in 2012. The Arroyo Grande, Calif., native was the 2011 NCAA runner-up, won the NCAA West Regional title and was third at the Pac-12 meet.
?She is now the most decorated runner in school history with 14 All-America awards combined between cross country and track and field.
?Fortunately, she won't be alone when it comes to leadership. Fellow seniors Becca Friday, Anne Kesselring, Sarah Penney and Taylor Wallace all have run championship-level races.
?Kesselring (Nurnberg, Germany) has three NCAA Championships appearances to her credit, while Friday (Bellingham, Wash.) has one, despite the fact that those two are more disposed to the middle distances during the track season.
?Penny (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) made her Pac-12 and NCAA West Regional debut in 2012, while Wallace (Klamath Falls, Ore.) has three straight conference cross country appearances.
?Junior Lanie Thompson emerged as a consistent fourth runner for the Ducks in 2011. The High Bridge, N.J., native has appeared in every championship level race for the Ducks each of the past two years to join Hasay and Kesselring on a very short list.
?The sophomore class is loaded with potential. Molly Grabill (Poway, Calif.) was the only freshman to run in the NCAA Championships for the Ducks in 2011. Megan Patrignelli (Monroe, N.Y.) made her debut at the Pac-12 meet, while middle distance specialist Laura Roesler (Fargo, N.D.) also added depth.
?The Ducks will need to replace their No. 2 and No. 3 runners following the graduation of Claire Michel and Bronwyn Crossman.
?To that end, Oregon has a pair of transfers and a number of freshmen.
?On of the most intriguing newcomers to cross country may already be on the team. Allie Woodward redshirted the 2011 season her first fall in Eugene, but the Green Bay, Wis., native impressed in the spring, taking third in the 10,000 at the Pac-12 championships, before finishing fifth at that distance at the NCAA Championships. She went on to win the U.S. junior title at 5,000 meters and placed eighth at the IAAF World Junior Championships.
?She'll be joined by a pair of senior transfers - Alexi Pappas from Dartmouth and Katie Conlon from Jamestown (N.D.) College. Pappas is a talented veteran distance runner who finished third in the steeplechase at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
?The Ducks also have a group of freshmen newcomers in Skylar Evans (Midlothian, Va.), Megan Fristoe (Bend, Ore.), Annie Leblanc (Repentigny, Quebec), Abbey Leonardi (Kenebunkport, Maine) and Ashley Maton (Bend, Ore.).

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY PREVIEW
With only three seniors on the roster, Oregon will be a young, but talented team in 2012.
The Ducks graduated four-time All-American Luke Puskedra and fellow senior Chris Kwiatkowski from last season's squad, but return seven runners from the 2011 Pac-12 Championships, and four who appeared at the NCAA West Regional.
The team will be led by Parker Stinson, a junior from Austin, Texas, who was seventh at the Pac-12 meet a year ago and 17th at the Regional. He'll be joined by Jeramy Elkaim, a sophomore from Livingston, N.J., who impressed as a freshman with a 20th-place finish at the league championships and a 38th-place showing at the Regional.
Ryan Pickering also continued the youth movement; the sophomore from West Palm Beach, Fla., was 39th at the 2011 Pac-12 Championships and also qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships in the 10,000 meters.
The experience on the Oregon squad is impressive.
Junior Ben DeJarnette, from Mechanicsville, Va., has appeared in every championship race for the Ducks over the last two seasons, while Oregon's underclassmen look to become the leaders of the future.
The 2011 season proved to be a great testing ground for sophomores Boru Guyota (Portland, Ore.), Matt Jablonski (Cockeysville, Md.) and Cole Watson (Rogue River, Ore.) who all ran at the Pac-12 Championships.
The Ducks also featured juniors Tim Costin (Springfield, Ore.), Mitch Hunt (Fremont, Neb.) and Hank Morrison (Carmel, Calif.) and sophomores Colby Alexander (Strongsville, Ohio) and Daniel Winn (Portland, Ore.) during the 2011 season.
Oregon had a number of freshmen redshirt the 2012 season, including Chris Brewer (Vista, Calif.), Russell Hornsby (Williamsburg, Va.), Matthew Melancon (Eugene, Ore.) and Chad Noelle (Greene, N.Y.).
The six newcomers for 2012 will make for some intriguing additions to the roster, especially Trevor Dunbar, who should have an immediate impact. The senior from Kodiak, Alaska, was a two-time cross country All-American for the University of Portland before transferring to Oregon in January.
Dunbar was 35th at the NCAA Championships in 2011 as a junior to help the Pilots take eighth in the team competition (30:05, 10,000 meters). He finished 25th as a sophomore at the NCAA meet in 2010 (30:21).
The Ducks have also brought in Freddy Ovett (Melbourne, Australia) and Richard Goodman (London, England) from overseas, as well as transfers Patrick Todd (Virginia) and Matt Miner (Dartmouth) and freshman Joe Holvey from Eugene.
In recent seasons, the men have experienced success on a national level rarely seen in TrackTown USA. Oregon won back-to-back NCAA titles in 2007 and 2008, and followed that with a runner-up finish in 2009. Those results harken back to the era of the legendary Steve Prefontaine, when the Ducks won national titles in 1971, 1973 and 1974, were second in 1970 and third in 1972.

TRACK TOWN, USA, HERITAGE
?The last four years have certainly lived up to the heritage established by the legends of TrackTown USA. In 24 NCAA championships and 16 Pac-10 championships, the Men and Women of Oregon have won 14 championships and another 13 silver medals.

Nanoparticles glow through thick layer of tissue

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? An international research team has created unique photoluminescent nanoparticles that shine clearly through more than 3 centimeters of biological tissue -- a depth that makes them a promising tool for deep-tissue optical bioimaging.

Though optical imaging is a robust and inexpensive technique commonly used in biomedical applications, current technologies lack the ability to look deep into tissue, the researchers said.

This creates a demand for the development of new approaches that provide high-resolution, high-contrast optical bioimaging that doctors and scientists could use to identify tumors or other anomalies deep beneath the skin.

The newly created nanoparticles consist of a nanocrystalline core containing thulium, sodium, ytterbium and fluorine, all encased inside a square, calcium-fluoride shell.

The particles are special for several reasons. First, they absorb and emit near-infrared light, with the emitted light having a much shorter wavelength than the absorbed light. This is different from how molecules in biological tissues absorb and emit light, which means that scientists can use the particles to obtain deeper, higher-contrast imaging than traditional fluorescence-based techniques.

Second, the material for the nanoparticles' shell --calcium fluoride -- is a substance found in bone and tooth mineral. This makes the particles compatible with human biology, reducing the risk of adverse effects. The shell is also found to significantly increase the photoluminescence efficiency.

To emit light, the particles employ a process called near-infrared-to-near-infrared up-conversion, or "NIR-to-NIR." Through this process, the particles absorb pairs of photons and combine these into single, higher-energy photons that are then emitted.

One reason NIR-to-NIR is ideal for optical imaging is that the particles absorb and emit light in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, which helps reduce background interference. This region of the spectrum is known as the "window of optical transparency" for biological tissue, since the biological tissue absorbs and scatters light the least in this range.

The scientists tested the particles in experiments that included imaging them injected in mice, and imaging a capsule full of the particles through a slice of pork more than 3 centimeters thick. In each case, the researchers were able to obtain vibrant, high-contrast images of the particles shining through tissue.

The results of the study appeared online on Aug. 28 in the ACS Nano journal. The international collaboration included researchers from the University at Buffalo and other institutions in the U.S., China, South Korea and Sweden. It was co-led by Paras N. Prasad, a SUNY Distinguished Professor and executive director of UB's Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics (ILPB), and Gang Han, an assistant professor at University of Massachusetts Medical School.

"We expect that the unprecedented properties in the core/shell nanocrystals we designed will bridge numerous disconnections between in vitro and in vivo studies, and eventually lead to new discoveries in the fields of biology and medicine," said Han, expressing his excitement about the research findings.

Study co-author Tymish Y. Ohulchanskyy, a deputy director of ILPB, believes the 3-centimeter optical imaging depth is unprecedented for nanoparticles that provide such high-contrast visualization.

"Medical imaging is an emerging area, and optical imaging is an important technique in this area," said Ohulchanskyy. "Developing this new nanoplatform is a real step forward for deeper tissue optical bioimaging."

The paper's first authors were Guanying Chen, research assistant professor at ILPB and scientist at China's Harbin Institute of Technology and Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology and Jie Shen of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Other institutions that contributed included Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Korea University at Seoul.

The next step in the research is to explore ways of targeting the nanoparticles to cancer cells and other biological targets that could be imaged. Chen, Shen and Ohulchanskyy said the hope is for the nanoparticles to become a platform for multimodal bioimaging.

One of the best things about your friends and family having a baby is that you get to shower them with cute baby gifts. Whether it be newborn baby grows, comfort blankets or teddies, the baby gift market is teaming with beautiful products ideal for babies of any age.

Kaka recalled to Brazil squad

Rio De Janeiro, Sep 28

Real Madrid playmaker Kaka is set to make his first international appearance after being recalled to the Brazil squad.

Kaka was named by coach Mano Menezes Thursday in a 23-man squad for Brazil's friendlies against Iraq in Malmo, Sweden, Oct 11 and Japan in Wroclaw, Poland, five days later, reports Xinhua.

The 2007 FIFA world player of the year has not represented Brazil since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He was included in the national squad for friendlies against Gabon and Egypt in October 2011 but was forced to withdraw because of injury.

"It's important to have players with the trajectory that Kaka has had in our team," Menezes said in Rio Thursday.

"In terms of his training, dedication and the level he is showing, we believe he will be able to perform well for Brazil when given the chance."

Kaka's selection comes despite the fact he is yet to play a competitive match for Real Madrid this season.

He showed glimpses of his best form Wednesday with a hat-trick in Real's 8-0 win in their unofficial match against Colombia's Millonarios at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Menezes says the performance showed the 30-year-old could reinvent himself as a striker, leaving room for him to play in the same team as Chelsea playmaker Oscar.

"Players like Kaka, who have gone through periods like he has, begin to reinvent themselves," Menezes said.

"Kaka has been training in a more advanced role according to my information. It's not the same function that Oscar now has."

Following is the Brazil squad:

Goalkeepers: Diego Alves (Sevilla), Jefferson (Botafogo), Victor (Atletico-MG).

Defenders: David Luiz (Chelsea), Dede (Vasco), Leandro Castan ( Roma),Thiago Silva (PSG), Adriano (Barcelona), Alex Sandro (Porto), Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Marcelo (Real Madrid).

Midfielders: Fernando (Gremio), Giuliano (Dnipro), Kaka (Real Madrid),Lucas (Sao Paulo), Oscar (Chelsea), Paulinho (Corinthians), Ramires(Chelsea), Sandro (Tottenham), Thiago Neves (Fluminense).

Strikers: Hulk (Zenit), Leandro Damiao (Inter), Neymar(Santos).

Will Home Improvements Take a Long Time?

Home improvements will vary in time length depending on what you want to get done. Having a bedroom or bathroom added to your house is going to take a lot longer than having the exterior painted. Adding a swimming pool to your backyard may take weeks, as well as additions to home insurance coverage while replacing your windows can only take a couple of days. It all depends on your house and the home improvement project in question.

When you are comparing companies that offer home improvement projects make sure you ask about how long the whole process will take, from concept to clean up. This will give you a better idea of how long you will be living in a mess and how to change your life to adapt to this situation. In some instances your kitchen may be out of working order for days, if not weeks, and if this is the case, then you might want to prepare ahead by buying a barbeque or saving up for a week's worth of take away.

Home Improvement Time Frames

One of the most common home improvement project these days is replacement windows and doors. Changing the glass on your windows can boost the energy level of your house, provide your house with a cleaner, crisper look and add more comfort to the area. You can do this project yourself in a weekend or get a contractor to do it. If you are simply replacing old systems with new ones, this can be done in a day or two. If you are having windows customized and the entire layout changed, then this can take a little longer.

Another home improvement project that shouldn't take more than a week or two is painting services. However, this will depend on the weather as well. Wet days will put a stop to the working day and thus if you are trying to paint the house during the rainy season, it might take a little longer to actually get the job done. It is best to do most home improvements during the dry season so you don't risk getting wet. Lots of home improvement jobs can only be done during dry weather from painting to roof repairs and restorations.

Adding any bedroom, bathroom or other addition to your house is going to take a little longer. This goes for indoor and outdoor facilities such as decks, pools and garages. You can expect these projects to take weeks, rather than days to complete but these are fairly substantial home improvements. In some instances entire walls will need to be taken out, floors put in, and roofs added onto - all of these things will take time.

Talking to Your Contractor

Regardless of how long the home improvement project will take, one thing generally remains the same - the commitment of the contractor to make sure you are not put out. Most contractors will work around your schedule. If you go to work during the day then they will try to work while you are gone and finish by the time you are home.

If this is something that is important to you, then look for a contractor that offers this kind of service. The last thing you want to worry about is the safety and security of your house while you are not there. You also want to be sure that your home doesn't look like a war zone for the next few weeks. All of this is completely understandable which is why asking for a home improvement time frame?and if the home improvement project will take a long time is completely acceptable and recommended.

'Mad Men,' Bryan Cranston eye Emmy Awards records

The Emmy Awards will be held Sunday, Sept 23. (Photo by Matt Sayles/Invision/AP)

(AP) ? Records could be set and hearts definitely will be broken at the Emmy Awards.

Sunday's ceremony gives "Mad Men" a chance to snare its fifth best drama award, surpassing fellow record holders "Hill Street Blues," ''L.A. Law" and "The West Wing."

"Breaking Bad" and "Homeland" are among the series that could prove spoilers for AMC's sophisticated saga about 1960s America.

Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad" has a shot at his fourth best drama actor victory, which would tie Dennis Franz's record set in 1999 for "NYPD Blue."

If Cranston wins, that would leave "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm and Michael C. Hall of "Dexter" out in the cold for the fifth time.

Jimmy Kimmel is host of the ceremony airing live at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC, with awards in 26 categories to be presented at the Nokia Theatre.

There's no question broadcast networks will be squirming: Five out of six best drama series slots were claimed by cable shows, both premium and basic, with the sixth going to PBS' "Downton Abbey." On the comedy side, HBO's "Girls," ''Veep" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" made big inroads.

For the elegantly soapy "Downton Abbey," the question is whether a switch from the miniseries category to drama series competition will spell doom for the chances of Maggie Smith, a winner last year, and other cast members including Michelle Dockery.

"Girls," HBO's tough, 21st-century spin on "Sex and the City," and its creator-star Lena Dunham could prove the evening's sweethearts. The show is up for four awards, including best comedy series.

Its heavyweight competition includes "Modern Family," which could claim its third consecutive best comedy series award.

In the miniseries and TV movie category, crowd-pleaser "Hatfields & McCoys" is up against competitors including "Sherlock: A Scandal in Belgravia" and "Game Change," a dramatization of the John McCain-Sarah Palin 2008 campaign.

But Emmys recognize TV's best, not most popular. While leading nominee "Mad Men" averaged just 2.6 million viewers last season, top-rated show "American Idol" (26 million-plus) isn't even in contention Sunday for best reality-competition program. At least host Ryan Seacrest is, but he faces the formidable Betty White ("Betty White's Off Their Rockers").

Talk show host Kimmel has the chance to burnish his reputation or do a painful David Letterman-style belly flop. He's riding a career wave after adroitly emceeing the White House Correspondents' Association dinner and with ABC's decision to move his late-night show into the thick of competition with Letterman and Jay Leno.

HBO came into the night with a leading 17 creative arts Emmys from a Sept. 15 ceremony honoring technical and other achievements. CBS was second with 13, followed by PBS with 11. Discovery received six awards, NBC got five and ABC and the Cartoon Network won four each. Fox received two trophies.

Emmy has to prove herself a winner with the audience. After rebounding somewhat to 13.5 million viewers in 2010 after an all-time low in 2008 of 12.3 million, last year's show drew 12.4 million viewers airing on Fox. The ceremony rotates annually among the four major networks.

PFT: Jets surprisingly cut veteran LB Thomas

Chandler Jones, Kevin KolbAP

We mentioned earlier in the week this was a big weekend for the Jones family, as?Jon defends his UFC light heavyweight belt tonight, while Chandler and Arthur face off in tomorrow night?s Patriots-Ravens game.

But the struggles they?ve faced throughout life, and continue to, makes their story about more than an athletic coincidence.

?All of this hasn?t dawned on me yet,? Jon Jones told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com about his family?s success. ?We?re all still at the very young stages of our careers. I have this thing where I?m really big against complacency, so I don?t want accept the attitude like, ?We did it!? because we haven?t done it yet. Things could go wrong. You?re on top of the world one year and the next you?re borrowing money.

?I think there?s much more to come, but I am really happy for my parents. They can look at this being a success story at this point.?

Arthur II and Camille Jones? boys have made names for themselves, after struggling through tragedies in their younger years, and fighting to make things easier for their parents.

Their oldest sister Carmen died of brain cancer at age 18, and all helped with her care during her struggle.

Now, they?re paying back their mother for the years she looked after them.

Camille Jones has lost almost all her sight because of complications of diabetes. She?s also on dialysis and awaits a kidney transplant.

Chandler?s paying for her medical insurance, while Jon?s hired a nurse and a chef to help their parents, who moved them out of a rough neighborhood to the small town of Endicott, N.Y. as children. ?I remember my dad telling our family we were going so we could have a better life,? Jon said.

Their parents will be in Toronto for Jon?s fight tonight, then head to Baltimore to see the other two. And for all they?ve been through, they try to keep things in perspective.

?Life hasn?t changed that much,? Arthur Jones II said. ?People at the church are very happy for me, but there?s no big brouhaha of, ?That?s Mr. Jones. He?s a famous dad.?

With Jon one of the top fighters in the world, and Chandler emerging as a contributor for the Patriots as a first-round pick, that could be changing, soon.

But as impressive is the way the family has banded together for each other.

Where a media trade union body owns a liquor license

Licenses of a liquor bar in the press clubs are omnipresent in India. The press club, which on principle does not function as a trade union body, is basically a place of recreations for media persons. But the journalists union or associations try to raise voices for the benefit of media persons and they are normally entitled for protest demonstrations time to time.

So ethically speaking a journalist trade union body should not pursue for recreational activities and it must not own a liquor license (meant for a bar in its office). But if you come to Guwahati, you may encounter a journalist union that owns a liquor license, which was recently in the local media in reference to a high court verdict.

The Gauhati High Court, in an interim order on September 18 in regards to some wine shops in the city expressed 'dismay and astonishment that a liquor license has been granted to the Journalist Union of Assam'.

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of the high court, while passing the order also mentioned about the location (of JUA office that possesses the bar) is approximately 110 meters from a Hindu religious place which 'requires introspection'. The court earlier in an order passed on July 9 directed the closure of all liquor shops and bars within a radius of 500 metres of educational institutions and religious places.

"The Court while perusing the list of 431 Liquor Licenses furnished by the Deputy Commissioner found to its dismay and astonishment that a liquor license has been granted to the Journalist Union of Assam in Sl. No.248 without disclosing whether it is a bar or wine shop. The location is shown as Zoo-Narengi Tiniali and is located at a distance of approximately 110 meters from a Namghar and a sanction order was issued on 18.02.2009. Without commenting any further, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan is of the view that this certainly requires introspection on the part of all concerned," said in the order.

Geetarha Pathak, the president of Journalist Union of Assam, which is affiliated to Indian Journalist Union, was communicated for his response in this regard on September 19, but nobody responded. It is alleged that the journalist union, which should have raised voice for basic minimum facilities for the media persons under the Indian Labour Act, has done little in this matter.

Otherwise everybody knows that the media persons of Assam in northeast India have to perform their duties under tremendous work load but with low return in terms of salary and other legitimate facilities. The State witnessed a media boom in the last decade, but the media persons including the journalists continued to be the victim of exploitation by their respective employers.

"There is no denying the fact that the journalists, who remained vocal against the exploitation faced by the workers in other sectors, have to work in most unsafe ambiances. They are denied their due economic benefits recommended by the statutory wage boards constituted by the government and even the relevant labor laws. As most of them work without proper appointment letters, they enjoy little job security. Similarly the insurance coverage for the media persons continues to be awful," said in an article released by The Cheer magazine.

Today Guwahati witnesses the publication of more than 25 morning dailies, half of those are in the Assamese language. Most of the dailies are published from more than one center, whereas three Assamese daily newspapers claim to enjoy around 100 000 circulation. Lately, six satellite news channels have emerged from the city, adding hundred more working journalists to the team of the sentinels.

"This is very unfortunate that media persons in Assam have to work with a salary starting with even Rs. 2000 with absolutely no job security. You can find more than 70 % newspaper employees in Assam, who are deprived of basic minimum facilities such as appointment letter, leave, provident fund, ESI etc," said DN Singh, a senior journalist based in Guwahati.

Speaking to this writer, National Union of Journalist office bearer Rajendra Prabhu informed that 'NUJ(I) does not encourage its union offices around the country to have a bar. He declared that he personally does not endorse any working journalist to get associated with the liquor business. Prabhu also argued that the journalists should try to improve their credibility all the time.
