Apple Continues To Support Traditional Mac Management In Mountain Lion Server

Workgroup Manager and Managed Preferences are alive and kicking in Mountain Lion Server.

In addition to launching Mountain Lion Server last week, Apple rather quietly released a Mountain Lion Server version of Workgroup Manager ? the traditional Mac management tool included in previous releases of OS X Server. The move was unexpected after Apple released the Advanced Administration guide for Mountain Lion Server, which implied that administrators would need to begin an almost-immediate shift to Mountain Lion Server?s Profile Manager.

The move is good news for many organizations that have an existing investment in OS X Server and Mac clients. Although Mountain Lion Server?s Profile Manager is arguably a more modern and enterprise-friendly solution, it only supports Macs running Lion and Mountain Lion. Any schools or businesses with clients still on Leopard or Snow Leopard would be out of luck if Profile Manager were the only available option.

While the move is good news, there is very real probability that the Mountain Lion release of Workgroup manager is meant to offer a stop-gap measure for organizations that still rely heavily on Managed Preferences. Given that Workgroup Manager isn?t mentioned in Apple?s advanced admin documentation and the emphasis that the company is placing on Profile Manager and configuration profiles, it seems likely that Apple won?t provide Workgroup Manager and related features in whatever OS X Server release follows Mountain Lion Server.

Apple?s move to an annual release cycle for OS X (and presumably OS X Server) means that Workgroup Manager and Managed Preferences could be gone for good within a year. Following the cancellation of the Xserve and what could be called the consumerization of OS X Server since the release of Snow Leopard Server three years ago, many organizations dependent on OS X Server, Open Directory, Managed Preferences, and other enterprise-focused technologies have wisely begun to consider their options moving forward.

Lion Server could be seen as a nudge to prompt organizations to seriously consider if a release of OS X Server more oriented to small businesses or workgroups would meet their needs and to evaluate and implement alternative enterprise solutions if it isn?t.

Mountain Lion Server, with its more polished and production-ready capabilities certainly poses that same question and it should motivate Mac IT professionals working with OS X Server to really look at the release and the management capabilities of Profile Manager as well as third-party alternatives. That investigation will likely lead to developing a strategic plan for Mac management and/or support that extends further than the next six to twelve months (at least).

It?s worth noting, however, that Mountain Lion?s focus on configuration profiles has led mobile management vendors to add Mac management as an option right next to iOS, Android, and other mobile platform management tools. Mobile management vendor?AirWatch, for example, already supports Mac management and rival MobileIron?plans ?to integrate Mac management into a seamless administration console and workflows. That gives Mac IT pros more choices than ever before as they consider what solutions will be best for their organizations going forward.

Forceps-assisted operative vaginal delivery is often much more traumatic and involves the use of spoon or tong-like devices to help position and maneuver the fetus. Forceps can cause blunt trauma to the baby?s head or abnormal pulling or twisting of the neck and shoulders, which could lead to brachial plexus injuries or Erb?s palsy.

Both of these methods also pose a risk to the mother as well. Tearing of the mother?s vagina, perineum, or rectum can occur and in some cases an episiotomy is necessary to open up the vagina for an easier insertion of forceps. Additional medication and anesthesia is often necessary for these operative vaginal delivery procedures, which can increase risk of medication errors.

Alternatives to Operative Vaginal Delivery to Avoid Injury

Your doctor should carefully monitor your pregnancy to determine your risk of a post-term delivery. If there is a sign that this may present issues, your doctor has a duty to explore options to avoid this situation and advise you accordingly.

If a post-term delivery is unavoidable, your doctor should explain all of your options. Failure to perform a timely cesarean section or offer this as an option could lead to a serious life-altering injury.

When his frustration at losing to South Korea Sunday bubbled over into a crude tweet about how people from that country "can go burn" and are "a bunch of mongoloids," what did he think was going to happen, exactly?

What did happen was so predictable that it hardly even needs to be mentioned. He was sent home, probably on the first available flight out of Heathrow.

The London Games, it seems, are destined to become known as the Twitterlympics ? or, more accurately, the first of the Twitterlympics, because social media isn't going anywhere. The question is: How much will the golden fist of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allow athletes to get way with? ?

Athletes are tweeting everything short of reports on trips to the loo. Normally, that's OK. We just get pearls like: "Walking the streets of London." (Thank you, @KingJames.)

But the press follows every athlete feed it can find, like buzzards circling above the smartphones of the unwary. And then the inevitable happens. Mr. Morganella vents his post-match spleen. American soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo flames one of the most beloved players in women's soccer history. A Greek triple jumper makes a crude and completely unprovoked comment about African immigrants.

The United States Olympic Committee, for its part, says it offers athletes no specific direction about tweeting during the Games. The 140-character digital stroll inside athletes' minds is, USOC officials figure, covered by existing codes of conduct.

So, for example, don't say anything on Twitter that you wouldn't say to a reporter. Or your mom.

Problem is, Ms. Solo would probably?troll Brandi Chastain, World Cup winner and kicker of the single most important penalty in American soccer history, directly to her face. The athletes say they could not compete without their sponsors, and it is unfair to deprive non-IOC sponsors of the platform that is the Olympics.

No word yet on whether those athletes will be forced to act as traffic cones in Piccadilly Circus by Supreme Olympic Mugwump Jacques Rogge, so the jury is still out on how far athletes can push Twitter protests at the Olympics.?

What is clear is that comments that are likely to offend virtually every reasonable human being on the planet are not suddenly OK because you type them using your thumbs. Morganella at least acknowledged that what he did was very, very wrong.?

"I made a huge error,? Morganella said in a statement.

Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou, for her part, seemed to think nothing of her pre-Olympics tweet that "with so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!"?

Her response:?"That's how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don't press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!"

She did not move on to London, at least.?

S.Africa rate cuts can't be taken for granted:Marcus

DURBAN (Reuters) - Further interest rate cuts in South Africa will depend on growth and inflation in coming months and should not be taken as a given, central bank Governor Gill Marcus reiterated on Saturday.

The Reserve Bank unexpectedly reduced rates by 50 basis points to 5.0 percent last week, citing concerns about the effect of a global downturn on Africa's largest economy.

The bank also cut its 2012 growth forecast to 2.7 percent from 2.9 percent and said the risks to the outlook were negative.

"We had previously thought that we were at the bottom of an interest rate cycle but events unfolded in an unexpected way," Marcus said of the decision.

Economic analysts have speculated the cut could be the start of another cycle of monetary easing after the bank slashed rates by a cumulative 6.5 percentage points between 2008 and 2010 to spur growth after a recession.

"Further easing however cannot be taken for granted and will be contingent on changing global conditions and well as further inflation and growth developments," Marcus told an editors' forum, echoing comments she made at the Bank's annual general meeting on Friday.

"I should emphasize that it is also important for the markets to pick up the signals from the changing fundamentals in the economy. If the fundamentals or circumstances change all of a sudden, this may lead to a change in policy."

Peugeot Citroen loses $990 million in first half

PARIS (AP) ? Carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen posted a net loss of ?819 million ($990 million) for the first half of the year, underscoring the difficulties the company faces with the French government over its restructuring plan.

The maker of two-thirds of France's cars is in a tailspin as a deepening recession in many markets in Europe takes its toll on its business ? Europe is Peugeot's main market. The company's share price has more than halved since March.

The first-half loss contrasts starkly with a profit of ?805 million in the same period last year and came on the back of a 5.1 percent fall in revenue to ?29.6 billion.

The company doesn't expect Europe to pick up anytime soon, saying Wednesday that it expects its European market to contract by 8 percent this year.

In response, Peugeot announced earlier this month that it would close a major factory in France and cut 8,000 jobs ? part of a plan to save ?2.5 billion by 2015. Those savings will also come from efficiencies gained by an alliance with General Motors. About half ? ?1 billion ? of those savings will come this year alone.

"The group is facing a difficult time," Chairman Philippe Varin said. "The depth and persistence of the crisis impacting our business in Europe requires the launch of the reorganization of our French production and a reduction in our structural costs."

But the company's cost-cutting plans have run afoul of President Francois Hollande's Socialist administration, which has said the restructuring is unacceptable and that it will force Peugeot to save some of the jobs it wants to eliminate.

On Wednesday, the government will unveil a plan to support the auto industry ? part of its carrot-and-stick strategy with Peugeot. It's expected to give incentives to French consumers to buy French cars and to support the clean-energy vehicles that the company excels at.

But much of Peugeot's problems stem from an over-supplied European car market, and it's unclear how much the government can do for the company. France's car industry was already given a bailout under former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Three-in-one drug wipes the floor with TB

A new drug combination is less toxic, quicker and cheaper than existing treatments, and seems to work against drug-resistant TB strains

After decades rampaging across the globe, tuberculosis has a real fight on its hands. That's thanks to the arrival of a drug combination that could for the first time dramatically shorten treatment and tackle both ordinary and multi-drug-resistant strains of TB.

Called PaMZ, the pill is a combination of the standard TB drug pyrazinamide with the antibiotic moxifloxacin ? not previously used against TB ? and PA-824, a drug whose potential against TB was reported by New Scientist in 2001.

PaMZ could wipe out several resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis ? the cause of most cases of TB ? which have been spreading through South Africa, India and the countries that made up the former Soviet Union. What's more, it could work in a sixth of the time of existing treatments, at a tenth of the cost ? as well as slashing by a third the number of pills required.

"We may have a major solution here," says Mario Raviglione, director of the World Health Organization's Stop TB campaign. The new treatment is "simpler, less toxic and much cheaper" than existing regimes, he says.

It also shows promise in treating TB in HIV-positive people, a real problem in sub-Saharan Africa.

PaMZ's potential emerged from a study in which various permutations of its three constituent drugs, plus one newcomer, bedaquiline, were tested on sputum samples from groups of people with TB in Cape Town, South Africa. PaMZ outperformed all other combinations, killing 99 per cent of TB bacteria within two weeks ? matching the four-drug treatment for ordinary TB.

In animal studies, PaMZ killed drug-resistant bacteria equally rapidly, and so could yield the first treatment lethal to both ordinary and resistant strains. It would also bring treatment time for resistant TB in line with ordinary TB. Andreas Diacon at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, the studies' lead researcher hopes to begin a larger trial soon. "If that's successful, we may be able to roll the treatment out within four or five years," he says.

Terrorist Offensive Kills 106 in Iraq

A deadly onslaught of bombings and shootings killed at least 106 people in Baghdad and across Iraq, the Associated Press reported on Monday. Though no one has taken responsibility, al-Qaida in Iraq said last week that it would attempt to destabilize the country and drive the government out of power this week. More than 200 people were wounded in the coordinated terrorist attacks, the deadliest of their kind in two years.

Diplomats and international groups have condemned the attacks, which were largely aimed at Sunni populations.

Here's a closer look at the facts surrounding al-Qaida's latest offensive and the international response.

Attacks spread across the country: Neighborhoods in Baghdad, Diyala province, towns surrounding Kirkuk, and Mosul were all among the victims of the attacks, with the only Shiite-dominated town attacked being Diwaniyah. Three people were killed there, and another 25 were wounded.

In another offensive, three carloads of gunmen pulled up to an Iraqi base in Udaim and killed 13 soldiers before fleeing.

U.N. decries Ramadan attacks: The Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative, Gyorgy Busztin issued a press statement on Monday, saying that "the scale and brutality of the attacks are appalling -- especially now, when Iraqis are not only celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, with its messages of peace and reconciliation, but are also welcoming thousands of returnees who have fled the ongoing violence in Syria."

State Department says al-Qaida "going to fail": U.S. State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland took a question on the Iraq bombings during a Monday briefing, noting that the U.S. provides security support to the Iraqi government, though Iraq was responsible for its own security.

She said that al-Qaida in Iraq staged the Ramadan attack in an effort to turn Sunnis against their government, but said of the group that "they're going to fail. The Iraqis know they're going to fail. But regrettably, this is a bloody pattern that we've seen in years past, that Ramadan has been exploited for the agendas of terrorists and those who don't have the best interest of Iraq at heart."

Attacks foreshadowed in Najaf: The holy city of Najaf witnessed car bombs along with Baghdad on Sunday, Reuters reported. Those bombings killed 20 people and wounded another 80.

Obama honors Colorado victims with military ties

RENO, Nev. ? President Barack Obama has honored four victims of the Colorado theater attack who had ties to the military.

Obama began his first campaign-focused trip since the Colorado shooting by remembering service members and veterans who were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire in a Colorado movie theater.

In a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Monday, Obama said, "These young patriots were willing to serve in faraway lands, yet they were taken from us as home."

Obama said the nation honors them, adding: "We stand with you as one united American family."

Among those killed in the attack were Jonathan Blunk, a 26-year-old Navy veteran; Jesse Childress, a 29-year-old Air Force cybersystems operator; John Larimer, a 27-year-old-sailor; and Rebecca Wingo, a 32-year-old Air Force veteran.

Pioneering astronaut Sally Ride ? the first American woman in space ? died Monday in La Jolla, Calif., after fighting pancreatic cancer for 17 months, according to the company she founded, Sally Ride Science.

She was 61.

NASA confirmed her death.

President Barack Obama called Ride ?a national hero and a powerful role model. She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars and later fought tirelessly to help them get there by advocating for a greater focus on science and math in our schools. Sally?s life showed us that there are no limits to what we can achieve.?

Ride, who was a physicist, became a household name and a symbol for young girls nationwide when, at age 32, she rode the space shuttle Challenger into space as a mission specialist on June 18, 1983, soaring into history.

?The thing that I?ll remember most about the flight is that it was fun,? Ride said on her company?s website. ?In fact, I?m sure it was the most fun I?ll ever have in my life.?

She?d become an astronaut after seeing an ad placed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1977 in the Stanford University student newspaper looking for astronauts. She was a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford at the time in physics, with degrees already in hand from Stanford in physics and English.

Until then, all American astronauts were male, largely taken from the ranks of military test pilots. But NASA decided to seek out scientists and engineers to join the astronaut corps, and Ride sent in her application ? as did about 8,000 other people.

Thirty-five new astronauts were chosen from that group, including Ride and five other women.

Ride returned to space on Oct. 5, 1984, again aboard Challenger, on the 13th space shuttle flight.

She was assigned to what would have been a third shuttle flight for her, but training for that mission was scrubbed in January 1986 after the Challenger exploded soon after takeoff, killing all seven crew members, including

Christa McAuliffe, the first member of the Teacher in Space Project .

Ride served on the presidential commission that investigated the crash.

After that, she served at NASA headquarters as special assistant to the administrator for long-range and strategic planning and became the first director of the space agency?s Office of Exploration.

?Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism ? and literally changed the face of America?s space program,? said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. ?The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally?s family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly.?

After leaving NASA in 1987, Ride returned to Stanford as a science fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control there. In 1989, she moved to the faculty of the University of California San Diego as a physics professor and director of the California Space Institute.

In 2001, she founded Sally Ride Science, where she worked to encourage ?young girls and boys to stick with their interests in science and to consider pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math.?

She also wrote seven science books for children.

Sally Kristen Ride was born in Encino, Calif., on May 26, 1951. She grew up in Encino and, as a girl, loved to play with her telescope and chemistry set. She siad her parents encouraged her interest in science.

Ride once told an interviewer how she first grew interested in space exploration during her youth thanks to a teacher.

?I was an ordinary girl, nothing special,? she said. ?You wouldn?t have picked me out of a crowd.?

Then, she said, a teacher had her class watch an early space shot on TV, and she was hooked.

As a girl, she also was a competitive athlete, taking part in national junior tennis tournaments and winning a tennis scholarship to Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles.

She is survived by Tam O?Shaughnessy, her partner of 27 years; her mother, Joyce; and a sister, Bear.
